15th century knights to fight with spears and swords in the Lithuanian pavilion
As far back as 600 years ago, on the 15th of July, the Battle of Grunwald took place, becoming one of the most famous European battles and one of the most important turning-points in the history of Lithuania. The victory in this battle ended the war that lasted two hundred years.
To commemorate this splendid anniversary, on 13th–20th July the Lithuanian pavilion will revive with the medieval spirit. It will provide participants of the EXPO exhibition with a unique opportunity to see the 15th century arms of knights who fought in this battle as well as try their heavy armours on. Knights armed in swords, spears and shields will demonstrate the martial art and battle tactics used back in those days.
A restored unique collection of historic wardrobe and jewellery will also be transported from Lithuania to Shanghai. Arms as well as tools used for domestic purposes and wardrobe have been restored on the basis of archaeological findings and using the old technologies for their manufacture. It is a unique opportunity to learn about the Baltic tribe consisting of Lithuanian ancestors, a tribe that created the greatest pagan empire in the Christian Europe – the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
Role-plays of the Battle of Grunwald, attended by knights from many countries, have been organised in Europe since 1998. Such events always attract hundred thousands of spectators.
Fights of medieval knights will take place in the Lithuanian pavilion daily from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., until 20th of July. Lithuanian pavilion is situated in Zone C 07, between Russia, Croatia and Luxembourg pavilions.
